Walnut Bookcase with Integrated Lighting

I was recently asked to design and make a bespoke bookcase to be a focal point on the half landing of the customer's house. The use of walnut and dark blue painted face frame, along with the integrated LED lighting, gives a richness and warmth to the piece.

The Project

As with all my projects the customer and I had a detailed discussion regarding the design and material use, culminating in a set of detailed 3D and measured drawings. Making and finishing the piece in my Dorset based workshop; the project took just over a month to complete.

The shelf depth was restricted; due to the width of the stairs, so the mid two shelves were designed to showcase larger books face on, whilst the top and bottom shelves accommodate the smaller paperbacks. The walnut was finished with Osmo 'hard-wax oil' and the tulipwood face frame was spray painted with a hard wearing scratch resistant paint. The LED lighting strip was grooved into the underside of each shelf for a clean look, connecting to an existing socket below the staircase. The clients and I were really happy with the impact of the piece, it can be seen from most areas of the house and has made the space feel bigger as your eye down the staircase.
